We live in a TMZ world where everything is recorded, uploaded, and released for the judgements of strangers who have little to no knowledge of the back story. The above is audio & corresponding transcript speak for themselves, but why it was recorded and then shared with the masses is more puzzling than a drunken game of C.O.D. On one hand we have Academy Award winning director Mel Gibson whose recent personal turmoil have greatly overshadowed his past accomplishments, on the other hand we have world renowned screenwriter Joe Eszterhas. Both men have made Trojan Magnum sized contributions to the entertainment industry. But Mel has had his name tarnished for the better part of a decade, he has himself to blame for that but how well do any of us know Mel Gibson?

My only interaction with Mel Gibson has been paying to see his movies and having him get deservingly rich. As a child if I was told “one day you will hear a recording of Mel Gibson going ape shit at his home in Costa Rica” I would’ve probably called the person who said that a ‘filthy, shit eating, cock nosed, liar’ (excuse the language I don’t use the word “liar” often). It’s debatable if knowing of a celebrity gives someone a right to judge them as a regular person/peer. I believe to truly know someone you need an equal amount of familiarity. Think about how many times in your life you’ve been judged by one branding moment with no insight to who you are. There’s a feeling of helplessness in not being able to change a skewed and ultimately inaccurate perception of you.

To my knowledge Mel has been recorded twice without his consent, the most recent being this rant on Joe Eszterhas, which was captured on a iPad by Eszterhas’ 15 year old son (a guest in Mel’s house). Both times Mel has been recorded, the masses have not been privy to his actions before any profanity laden outburst, only during and after. Its very suspicious to say the least, show me the worst side of anyone and 9 out of 10 times it will look bad (Ke$ha in a bikini bad). If Mel Gibson is as hate filled and racist as people claim he is, why not get the man some help?

Being a rageaholic is a very real condition that affects people from all races, religions, creeds, and backgrounds. Treatment for a rage addict isn’t public shaming or humiliation, they could very well be triggers for another outburst. Mel Gibson has 8 children who need their dad to be healthy, those are 8 relationships that have to be rebuilt or strengthened. Mel Gibson is a man who was brave enough to have a dream about entertaining the world through theater, a man who lived to see his dream come true, only to see his reputation tarnished, and have his work become unfairly tainted.

I want to publicly state that I enjoy Mel Gibson’s work as an actor & director and would truly like to see Mel get help in some form.

Side Note: The downfall, spiral, and eventual death of a celebrity in need always seems to be the better story than rallying behind someone in need. If this is how we treat our stars, imagine the schmucks no one’s heard about.
